Webinar: Using smart card and GPS data for policy planning: the case of Transantiago
Join ALC-BRT Centre of Excellence for a webinar on using smart card and GPS data for policy planning. EMBARQ is a member of ALC - BRT Centre of Excellence, helping develop a new framework for planning, design, financing, implementation and operation of BRT in different urban areas.
What
Marcela A. Munizaga, Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of Universidad de Chile and vice president of the Chilean Transport Engineering Society, will provide a brief description of the Transantiago public transport system, and methods they have developed to obtain data including trip origins and destinations, bus speed, service quality indicators and time use patterns.
When
Thursday, August 28, 2014, from 12:30pm to 1:40pm (EDT). Look it up in your local time.

More information
The introduction of a new public transport system in Santiago, Chile, in 2007 brought to us an unexpected gift: the availability of what we now call BIG DATA - massive amount of data obtained from the devices installed to control the operation of buses and to administer the fare collection process. Many other cities in the world have been experiencing the same, and sooner or later, this is likely to happen everywhere. Many researchers have seen this as an opportunity, and have developed tools to obtain valuable information from the available data. The webinar will discuss the case of Transantiago and how the data can change the way we do transport planning.
