EMBARQ India co-hosts panel discussion on creating people-centric cities

EMBARQ India and Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation co-hosted a panel discussion entitled “The Next Round of JnNURM Investments in Urban Transport: Opportunities and Challenges” on 13th February 2013 at the India International Centre, New Delhi.
At the event, an EMBARQ paper on the vision for creating people cities through land-use transport integration, authored by Dario Hidalgo, Madhav Pai, Aileen Carrigan, Amit Bhatt, and Benjamin Owen was released. This report, published with support from Shakti Foundation, aims to make a contribution to the important debate around the national urban transport policies and instruments. It was officially launched by Krishan Dhawan, CEO, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation; Jamshyd N.Godrej, Chairman, Shakti Board of Directors; Anil Baijal, Ex-Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development; Charlotte Pera, CEO, ClimateWorks Foundation; and Amit Bhatt, Strategy Head - Urban Transport, EMBARQ India.
Chaired and Moderated by Mr. Anil Baijal, India’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) has invested US$20 billion in urban infrastructure (including transport) and basic services to the urban poor. Although JnNURM is a very important advance, it has not sufficiently shifted investment in the urban transport sector from road widening and road expansion to sustainable transport. The discussion will be based on an assessment of and suggestions for national investment policies in urban transport. The panel discussion explored opportunities and challenges to improve the national urban transport funding mechanism one of which is India’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM). The discussion focused on the key recommendations outlined in the report, which involve policies that provide incentives and lay down requirements for land use and transport integration. Improving the quality of the Comprehensive Mobility Plans (CMPs), and effective monitoring of key mobility parameters was also emphasised by the participants.
