EMBARQ presents bus corridors traffic safety webinar
EMBARQ’s Nicolae Duduta will present a webinar on traffic safety in bus corridors on Friday, September 27, at 11:00 am EDT. Duduta is an Associate Transport Planner based in EMBARQ’s Washington, D.C. office, whose work focuses on transport, urban development, and traffic safety projects across the EMBARQ Network. Presented for the BRT Center of Excellence, the webinar will analyze how choices made in the planning and design of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system can have a great impact on its safety performance.
Interested participants can register for the webinar here. For those unable to participate, the full presentation is available online.
Factors that influence the safety of a BRT, or Busway corridor, include counterflow lanes, speed management, and the location of pedestrian crossings. Friday’s webinar will examine in detail the relative safety performance of typical BRT design features, using findings from crash frequency models and qualitative observations gleaned from road safety inspections. Duduta’s findings will be illustrated through several case studies, including Metrobus (Mexico City), Metrobus (Istanbul), and TransOeste (Rio de Janeiro). Finally, the webinar will feature a discussion on the relationship between safety and operational performance of a BRT.
