RELEASE: WRI Ross Center Joins EV30@30 Campaign to Accelerate the Transition to Clean Energy Transport
WASHINGTON, DC (September 17, 2018) — WRI Ross Center is committed to accelerating the adoption of more energy-efficient solutions for the transport sector, including electrification of vehicle fleets. As scientists ring the warning bells about the need to step up climate ambition, WRI is joining the EV30@30 Campaign to help bring more electric vehicles to the world’s largest markets.
The EV30@30 Campaign aims to speed up the deployment of electric vehicles, reaching at least 30 percent of all new vehicle sales by 2030, including two and three wheelers, cars, vans, buses and trucks.
The United Kingdom and seven major companies, including the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, announced their support for the campaign last week. Existing members include more than 30 cities and Canada, China, Finland, France, India, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, covering a large portion of the world’s electric vehicles market.
“Carbon emissions in the transportation sector account for almost a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions and transport is one of the fastest-growing end-use energy sectors,” said Emma Stewart, director of urban efficiency and climate at WRI Ross Center. “We welcome the work of the EV30@30 Campaign in creating market conditions that will make the electric vehicle transition cost-effective and encouraging new charging infrastructure.”
“By working with leaders and early adopters, the EV30@30 Campaign will increase the chances of successfully transitioning to electric vehicles, which is critical to sustainable development,” said Sebastian Castellanos, urban efficiency and climate associate at WRI Ross Center. “We look forward to using our on-the-ground expertise and research to support the campaign’s ambitious goals.”
WRI Ross Center draws on its global and local experience in urban planning and mobility to create accessible, equitable, healthy and resilient urban areas for people, businesses and the environment to thrive.
The EV30@30 Campaign is organized by the International Energy Agency’s Clean Energy Ministerial-Electric Vehicles Initiative and was launched in Beijing in June 2017. It is also supported by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, The Climate Group, FIA Foundation, Global Fuel Economy Initiative, Hewlett Foundation, International Zero Emission Vehicle Alliance (ZEV Alliance), Natural Resources Defense Council, Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), UN Environment, and UN-Habitat.
