More information
Many within the Republic of the Philippines are working to mainstream the low-carbon path in the transport sector at both the national and local levels. To combat the cross-sectoral issue of carbon reduction through transport, the President of the Philippines has converged leaders among a range of relevant government agencies to formulate the National Environmentally Sustainable Transportation Strategy (NESTS). Together with the leadership of the Department of Transportation and Communications, with the cooperation and support of an inter-agency, multi-sectoral network of local sector experts, NGOs, and research institutions, the country is collaborating to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in the transport sector. The collaborators have already identified key sectors for improvement: shifting towards a non-motorized or mass transport model, undertaking extensive mass media campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of high-carbon transport, and offer the tools for local governments to make actionable change.
Increasing awareness of low-carbon transport and building the technical capacities of local government units (LGUs) demands assistance from a network of multilateral international organizations and development partners. Expanding low-carbon transport will also demand the exchange of information and best practices across the country and its various regions. The Philippines’ government understands that to successfully create a path towards a low-carbon transport sector, efforts need to be aligned both vertically and horizontally, encompassing a wide variety of both sectors and regions to create the most impact.
The Low Emission Development Strategies Global Partnership (LEDS GP) Transport Sector Working Group is providing this webinar as part of a series of webinars on low emission transport that will be offered between March and December 2014.
