Today (December 3), during the COP21 Buildings Day, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) pledged a $2 million grant to WRI to support the implementation of local building efficiency policies and actions in cities around the world. Announcing the partnership was Dr. Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of GEF, and Andrew Steer, President and CEO of WRI.

PARIS (December 2, 2015)– The 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) initiative today announced new signatories to the 10% Resilience Pledge, with a total of 19 mayors and city leaders committing to dedicate 10 percent of their city's annual budget toward resilience-building activities throughout their term in office.

WRI Turkey Sustainable Cities organized the third Livable Cities Symposium on November 19-20 in Istanbul, with over 400 representatives from local governments, the private sector, NGOs and universities in attendance. The Symposium focused on creating smart and energy efficient cities—hosting a total of 45 speakers from 13 different countries.

Transport is one of the fastest growing sources of CO2 world-wide and is the largest energy consuming sector in 40% of countries worldwide while being the second largest in most of the remaining countries. Action to limit global average temperature rise to less than 2°C, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) without including the transport sector is unrealistic.

The Santa Fe business district in the west of Mexico City is known as a “3D” area—distant, dispersed, and disconnected. Employees spend an average of 2.6 hours a day (26 days a year) stuck in traffic attempting to access the district. Intense traffic congestion affects other areas like Insurgentes Sur to the south of the Mexican capital, and Reforma-Centro in the center of the city. And in the Polanco-Lomas business center, average rush hour speeds reach a low of 7.5 km/h (4.66 mph), and traveling just 500 meters can take up to half an hour.
