As the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, prepares to launch its MOVE bus rapid transit (BRT) system, the city is taking measures to ensure that public safety is a top priority. Representatives of 73 bus companies recently completed the safety module of the Multipliers Capacity Training program, which teaches safe driving practices that bus drivers can implement to provide safe, quality service to BRT passengers. The 115 drivers that attended will in turn be tasked with teaching their peers, which will instill safe driving practices throughout the entire network of 2,260 bus drivers.

EMBARQ Turkey has worked to improve cycling infrastructure and cycling conditions in Turkey since 2010. As a whole, the team of urban planners and traffic safety experts have made enormous inroads in developing an appealing environment for cyclists by improving intersections, training city officials on bicycle planning, and promoting policies that support non-motorized transport.

This past month EMBARQ Mexico participated in the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), held in Washington, D.C. At the meeting, Juan José Hernández, Integrated Systems Analyst for EMBARQ Mexico, presented an assessment of Mexico City’s bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Metrobús.

Beijing’s subway system, one of the longest in the world, is confronted by excessive congestion and costly government subsidies. In a controversial move, the city government has decided to increase the standard subway fare, currently fixed at 2 Yuan (USD $0.33) per trip. If the proposal survives an upcoming public hearing, Beijing will join the ranks of cities like São Paulo, Brazil and Mexico City, Mexico in raising fares for public transport.

India’s third full BRT system begins trial operationsFebruary 04, 2014

On January 26, 2014 — as the country celebrated its Republic Day — Surat, India began trial operations of its Sitilink BRT system. Out of the proposed 30 kilometer (19 mile) corridor, 10 kilometers (6 miles) have opened for trial operations. The system connects the city of Surat, with its population of 4.5 million people, with the edge city of Navsari. The Sitilink BRT network will provide vital services to a rapidly growing city that was previously without any public transport system.

WASHINGTON—Michael R. Bloomberg was appointed today to serve as Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change to the United Nations. In this role, Bloomberg will support United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to mobilize action among cities to combat climate change. As a Special Envoy, Bloomberg will consult with other mayors in order to raise a level of political commitment and concrete action.

Beijing is also China’s most motorized city, with a vehicle fleet totaling 5.4 million.
