NEW YORK, NY (February 1, 2023) – World Resources Institute presented the $250,000-grand prize for the 2021-2022 WRI Ross Center Prize for Cities to Todos al Parque (“Everyone to the Park”), a long-standing parks and public greenspaces project by the Mayor’s Office of the City of Barranquilla, Colombia. Thanks to the initiative, 93% of Barranquilla residents now live within an 8-minute walk of an urban green space.

The 27th Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meets November 6-18, 2022, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
SHARM EL SHEIKH (November 20, 2022) - The UN climate negotiations (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt concluded with delegates reaching agreement to establish a fund to help vulnerable countries deal with losses and damages from climate impacts. Negotiators also called for countries to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, but the talks concluded without new, strong language on curbing greenhouse gas emissions or giving developing countries confidence that funding for adaptation is ramping up fast enough to double by 2025.

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, EGYPT (November 14, 2022) — At COP27, the World Resources Institute and partners launched the African Cities Water Adaptation Fund (ACWA Fund) with the aim of channeling $5 billion towards urban water resilience solutions in 100 African cities by 2032.

Two new researchers have been awarded the prestigious Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship for Sustainable Transport and Energy Efficiency for transformative research proposals to challenge conventional wisdom. In addition to the global award to a young researcher or researchers, which has been awarded since 2012, a second award supports a young African researcher, an extension of the scholarship now in its third year.

As work to accelerate global clean air solutions continues, Clean Air Catalyst, a partnership funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and led by WRI and Environmental Defense Fund, is adding Nairobi, Kenya, to the project's portfolio of pilot cities. Nairobi joins existing programs in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Indore, India, as the third city where the Catalyst will focus its efforts.
