On September 24, 2014, Ashoka Changemakers and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) announced the Hosur Sarjapur Road (HSR) Neighborhood Improvement Plan as a winner of the “Safer Roads, Safer India: Game Changing Innovations that Save Lives” Challenge.

Bloomberg Philanthropies, the foundation of three-term New York City Mayor and current United Nations Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, Michael R. Bloomberg, announced today a new phase of its Global Road Safety initiative. The initiative aims to reduce fatalities and injuries from road traffic crashes worldwide.

As an important port city in northern China, Qingdao has been a key business hub over the past century, and is becoming even more influential as China emerges as a new commercial center of the world. However, rapid urbanization and increasing vehicle use have caused many problems in the city – similar to other rapidly growing cities worldwide – including traffic congestion, increased greenhouse gas (GHG) and local air pollutants emissions, and water shortages.

EMBARQ India Director Madhav Pai spoke at the Smart Cities Summit on ‘Five Principles for Mobility in Smart Cities.’ The summit, held on August 22 and 23 in Mumbai, was attended by over 300 people, including government officials, urban development and transport professionals, corporations, and other practitioners.

EMBARQ Mexico recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Los Mochis, the largest city in the Municipality of Ahome, which is in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. With a population of about 250,000, Los Mochis is working to set an example for cities across the country to modernize public transport and urban mobility. EMBARQ Mexico will help to implement a mobility strategy that will shape sustainable urban development and improve quality of life.

As a partner of this initiative, EMBARQ Turkey recently participated in a workshop for cities throughout Turkey to improve sustainable urban mobility.

Well-planned and effectively implemented concession contracts are a crucial part of ensuring high quality public transport systems. These regulations are negotiated between the city and private companies that bid for the right to operate transport systems under certain conditions. On August 15, 2014 EMBARQ Brasil and the World Bank organized the “Public Transport Concession Models: Practices and Trends” seminar in São Paulo, Brazil to spread global lessons on concession contracts for transport.
