New analysis by the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution finds that despite declines in deaths from household air and water pollution, pollution overall still causes 1 in 6 deaths worldwide every year, claiming the lives of more than 9 million people.

Cities and subnational governments can be critical drivers of building decarbonization. In 2022, six new subnational governments have committed to decarbonize the built environment by joining WRI’s Zero Carbon Building Accelerator (ZCBA), funded by the Global Environment Facility and supported by the UN Environment Programme. Since 2021, the ZCBA has been working in Colombia and Turkey to create national roadmaps and align city action plans for building decarbonization.

Albany, NY (April 7, 2022) — Today an agreement was reached on New York’s annual State Budget. When passed, the budget will enact a nation-leading commitment for New York to achieve the first fully zero emission statewide school bus fleet in the country.

WASHINGTON (March 24, 2022) — On February 24, Russia invaded Ukraine. The invasion has led to widespread destruction across the country and scores of civilians have been killed, injured and displaced. According to the U.N., more than 10 million people have fled their homes since the invasion began. Russia’s assault on Ukraine continues.

At Transforming Transportation 2022, the Vision Zero Challenge recognized four Latin American cities that have taken important strides to make their streets safer and more equitable.
In 2021, the Vision Zero Challenge worked closely with four cities – Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima, Peru; Mérida, Mexico; and Belo Horizonte, Brazil – to guide them through their efforts to develop and implement a road safety plan aligned with at least one Vision Zero tenet, such as speed management or road safety for children.

The Coalition for Urban Transitions has put zero-carbon, resilient and inclusive cities firmly on the agenda of national governments the world over.
Following five years of supporting and advocating for national government leadership on sustainable, prosperous and equitable cities, the Coalition for Urban Transitions will sunset at the end of 2021. A special initiative of the New Climate Economy (NCE), the Coalition was jointly managed by C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities.
