On December 5 and 6, 2013, EMBARQ Mexico partnered with the National Workers Housing Fund Institute (Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores – INFONAVIT) to host the “Connected Cities: Sustainable Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) through reform of the regulatory framework” workshop in Mexico City.

Cities across the globe now have more resources at their disposal to improve traffic safety and reduce crashes and fatalities. In December 2013, EMBARQ launched two publications that highlight the positive impact that sustainable transport initiatives – such as mass transport, bicycling, and walking – can have on traffic safety, in addition to numerous other co-benefits.

In seven short weeks, Sundays in Gurgaon, India, have become ubiquitously associated with Raahgiri Day, a non-motorized community event that closes 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) of city streets to vehicles and opens them to people. Boasting about 60,000 weekly participants, Gurgaon’s streets are now full of revelers playing, walking, and riding bicycles each Sunday.

On December 12, 2013, EMBARQ Brazil hosted “On the Way to an Urban Mobility Plan,” in São José dos Campos, the seventh largest city in the state of São Paulo, boasting a population of 674,000 inhabitants. The event aimed to build the capacity of the city’s technical team tasked with preparing a sustainable urban mobility plan.

EMBARQ Turkey was awarded the “Public Transportation and Public Health Award” in the Environment category from the Turkish Public Health Association. The award recognizes EMBARQ Turkey for its non-motorized transport project BikeLab Istanbul.

The deadline to submit expressions of interest for the 2014 Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship for Sustainable Transport and Energy Efficiency has been extended to January 3, 2014. Last month, EMBARQ and the Schipper Family announced a call for applications for the 2014 Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship for Sustainable Transport and Energy Efficiency. In order to accommodate sustained interested in the Scholarship, the committee has elected to extend the deadline for expressions of interest to Friday, January 3, 2014.

On November 20, 2013, EMBARQ Turkey hosted its first Livable Cities Symposium in Istanbul, Turkey. Boasting a lineup of 17 expert speakers from five different continents, the Symposium brought together urban planners, engineers, government officials, and development professionals to address how sustainable urban development can contribute to healthy, active, and livable cities.

On November 28, Beijing’s municipal government announced it will further constrict its vehicle quota controls starting in 2014, but vehicle ownership restriction alone isn’t enough to mitigate the city’s severe air pollution and traffic congestion. Beijing has announced an effort to further constrict its vehicle quota control regulation in the hopes of curbing air pollution and traffic congestion in China’s capital city. Echoing the city’s recent “Clean Air Action Plan (2013-2017),” an amendment to the car ownership restriction regulation was issued on November 28 that will cut the annual vehicle increases from 240,000 to 150,000 beginning in 2014.
