Bangalore is the third largest city in India, with a population of about 8.5 million people. As the sole provider of public bus transport, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) carries about 4.8 million passenger trips daily – and accounts for 42% of all motorized travel in the city. Facing pressures of rapid population growth and increasing private motorization, BMTC is implementing major reforms in order to improve the quality of its service.

EMBARQ’s Nicolae Duduta will present a webinar on traffic safety in bus corridors on Friday, September 27, at 11:00 am EDT. Duduta is an Associate Transport Planner based in EMBARQ’s Washington, D.C. office, whose work focuses on transport, urban development, and traffic safety projects across the EMBARQ Network. Presented for the BRT Center of Excellence, the webinar will analyze how choices made in the planning and design of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system can have a great impact on its safety performance.

1 billion of the world’s population has a disability. 80% of these people live in developing countries, many subsisting below the poverty line. These are the people who most need accessible, affordable, public transport. Yet, disability and accessible transport have been notably absent from development agendas due, in part, to the lack of awareness and understanding of disability as a development issue.

As India’s public bus companies work to stay afloat amidst rising gas prices and shrinking budgets, EMBARQ India is helping. From June 7th-10th, EMBARQ India conducted a series of two-day workshops, one for BEST (Mumbai’s City Bus Service Provider) and one for NMMT (Navi Mumbai Bus Service Provider), aimed at teaching bus drivers how to drive more safely and more efficiently. By working together, EMBARQ India and Mumbai’s bus companies are improving both the safety of bus operations and the fuel efficiency of the vehicles.
