• The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), in partnership with the Sustainable Transport Award Steering Committee, has announced four city finalists for the 2014 Sustainable Transport Award (STA): Buenos Aires, Argentina; Indore, India; Lanzhou, China; and Suwon, South Korea.

  • EMBARQ India received special recognition in the third edition of the Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards, announced at last week’s Volvo Nobel Memorial Seminar in Bangalore, India. EMBARQ India’s submission, “Towards a Walkable and Sustainable Bengaluru: A Safe Access Project for Indiranagar Metro”, aims to improve safety and accessibility for bikers and pedestrians around Bangalore’s metro stations.

  • For the next two weeks, the EMBARQ Network will be participating in the nineteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) taking place in Warsaw, Poland. EMBARQ, the sustainable urban transport and urban planning program of the World Resources Institute (WRI), will have several experts leading and speaking at side events throughout the conference.

  • Applications are now open for the 2014 Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship for Sustainable Transport and Energy Efficiency. Provided jointly by the Schipper Family and EMBARQ, the sustainable transport and urban planning program of the World Resources Institute (WRI), the Scholarship will award an extraordinary candidate up to $10,000 to advance transformative research in efficient and sustainable transport.

  • For many cities, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a highly cost-effective option for developing a comprehensive, high-quality public transport system. Arequipa, Peru – Peru’s second largest city – is no exception. For several years, the city has been pursuing the idea of a modern integrated transport system.

  • EMBARQ Brazil aids Ministry of Cities with capacity building program targeted to mayors and public managers

    Brazil has set a national goal for all cities with over 20,000 inhabitants aimed at establishing an urban mobility plan by 2015. The country is rolling out activities to ensure cities are fully capacitated and appropriately informed.

  • The pedestrianization of Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula, which began in 2011, has resulted in the conversion of over 250 streets from car-dominated roads to people-oriented spaces. EMBARQ Turkey played a key role in conceptualizing and catalyzing the pedestrianization project, and is now furthering its contribution by conducting a survey assessment and analysis of the project’s success.

  • Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) – a high-quality, efficient, bus-based mode of public transport – can shorten commuting times, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and generally improve quality of life for city residents. Today, 166 cities around the world use BRT and busway systems—up from just 45 cities since EMBARQ’s founding in 2002. EMBARQ, the sustainable urban transport and urban planning program of the World Resources Institute (WRI), has played a major role in scaling up the BRT concept to cities throughout the world.

  • On June 21, 2013, Mexico took a big step towards a low-carbon economy and improved public health by implementing a new fuel efficiency standard for light vehicles in Mexico – the first fuel efficiency standard in Latin America. EMBARQ Mexico played a major role in developing this new standard, writing draft regulation, proposing mechanisms for economic flexibility, and assisting the government of Mexico during the negotiation process.
