Advanced bus systems have the unique potential to provide innovative and efficient solutions to traffic congestion, vehicle emissions, and road safety at a much lower cost to cities than rail systems. With more than 160 advanced bus systems either in operation or under construction in cities around the world, as well as more than 20 cities currently exploring the possibility, the need to facilitate a network through which cities can share valuable knowledge and practices is clear.

Q1. How can we tackle the problem of rising obesity and physical inactivity through transport?
Lack of physical activity contributes to 3.2 million deaths annually, yet just 150 minutes of physical activity per week - about 20 minutes per day - can improve health and reduce the risk of disease. A study by the New York City Department of Health showed that those who take mass transport, cycle and walk as their main form of transport, receive more physical activity than those who rely on cars.

BikeLab Istanbul, a new project from EMBARQ Türkiye, recently published a report that identifies a number of actions to make Istanbul more bike-friendly and maximize the benefits from it. Istanbul, a city of 13.4 million inhabitants, has an advanced bus system called the Metrobus, which transports as many people per day as an efficient light-rail or subway system. Istanbul’s system is so widely used that it is running over capacity, delivering a less-than-optimal quality of service to the people of Istanbul.

EMBARQ Turkiye’s BikeLab Istanbul hosted a February 11th workshop, in which experts addressed the role of the bicycle in Turkey’s transportation framework and discussed issues of safety, the design of a bike network, and the challenges of employing the bicycle as a means of transportation in Turkey’s urban areas.
