Safer, cleaner and affordable transport for all is the focus of a partnership between UN-HABITAT and EMBARQ.
UN-HABITAT, the United Nations agency for human settlements, is promoting sustainable urban development and adequate shelter for all. The joint initiative is a sustainable transport effort highlighting the needs of poor and vulnerable groups, and strives to make urban mobility planning more participatory, and to improve access for all to transport possibilities.

Representatives of the Brasília’s state government, bus service providers, construction companies and other stakeholders involved in the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor of the Brazilian capital are meeting until tomorrow in a Strategic Alignment Workshop, coordinated by EMBARQ Brasil. The project will have great benefits for the city and its inhabitants, with travel time on the public transportation Axis South to be halved and CO2 emissions to be significantly reduced.

“It is not possible to continue to receive extensions in the regulations of imported used vehicles. It is urgent to have long-term public policies that allow for planning, and the State should implement strong measures to enable monitoring of imported used cars," concluded representatives from civil associations across Mexico, including EMBARQ México, Centro Mario Molina, and the Mexican Center for Environmental Law.

Urbanization is one of the most significant modern-day phenomena and making urban transport more sustainable has become an urgent development priority. Six out of 10 people will live in cities by 2030. These growing cities are struggling to provide services to residents and deal with overburdened roads, as well as the threat of climate change and rising road traffic injuries.

EMBARQ Brasil placed first in the Sustainability category of Brazil’s Top Blog 2012 awards, for their blog, TheCityFixBrazil. The award was presented to EMBARQ Brasil’s Rejane Fernandes, Maria Fernanda Cavalcanti, and Mariana Gil in a January 26th awards ceremony at Sao Paulo’s Paulista University.

This year's meeting of government leaders, policy experts, economists, and transport practitioners highlighted big opportunities for sustainable transport at the global, national, and local levels.

The World Resources Institute, led by its sustainable transport center, EMBARQ, and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) established a partnership today that will further their mutual goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from urban transportation. The partnership focuses on scaling up solutions and enhancing C40 cities transport efforts related to sustainable urban planning, bus rapid transit systems, and non-motorized transit initiatives.

The need for action on sustainable transport has never been more apparent than it is today. The world’s population is expected to reach a whopping 9.8 billion people by 2050, with about 70 percentof these people residing in cities. Meanwhile, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are on the rise.

Peru’s legislature approves continuation of 2012 initiative to motivate and reward local governments for taking steps toward improved road safety, public spaces, and non-motorized transport

In a victory for EMBARQ Andino and the team led by Jorge Jara and Sybil Settlemyre, Peru’s legislature passed the 2013 Municipal Management and Modernization Plan, continuing a 2012 initiative to motivate and reward local governments for taking steps toward improved road safety, public spaces, and non-motorized transport. This national policy offers financial recompense to the local governments that successfully complete the 2013 goals.
