EMBARQ China weighs in on the long-term viability of Beijing’s new measureDecember 04, 2013
Beijing, China’s vehicle fleet currently totals about 5.4 million, ranking it first in motorization of any Chinese city. On November 28, Beijing’s municipal government announced it will further constrict its vehicle quota controls starting in 2014, but vehicle ownership restriction alone isn’t enough to mitigate the city’s severe air pollution and traffic congestion. Beijing has announced an effort to further constrict its vehicle quota control regulation in the hopes of curbing air pollution and traffic congestion in China’s capital city. Echoing the city’s recent “Clean Air Action Plan (2013-2017),” an amendment to the car ownership restriction regulation was issued on November 28 that will cut the annual vehicle increases from 240,000 to 150,000 beginning in 2014.

The recently launched Rickshaw Rising Challenge provides a breakthrough opportunity for entrepreneurs and small businesses to change the face of urban mobility in India. The Challenge calls for applications from early-stage businesses with the potential to create large-scale change in India’s auto-rickshaw sector and respond to the challenges of urbanization.

Brazil has set a national goal for all cities with over 20,000 inhabitants aimed at establishing an urban mobility plan by 2015. The country is rolling out activities to ensure cities are fully capacitated and appropriately informed.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) – a high-quality, efficient, bus-based mode of public transport – can shorten commuting times, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and generally improve quality of life for city residents. Today, 166 cities around the world use BRT and busway systems—up from just 45 cities since EMBARQ’s founding in 2002. EMBARQ, the sustainable urban transport and urban planning program of the World Resources Institute (WRI), has played a major role in scaling up the BRT concept to cities throughout the world.
