As India’s public bus companies work to stay afloat amidst rising gas prices and shrinking budgets, EMBARQ India is helping. From June 7th-10th, EMBARQ India conducted a series of two-day workshops, one for BEST (Mumbai’s City Bus Service Provider) and one for NMMT (Navi Mumbai Bus Service Provider), aimed at teaching bus drivers how to drive more safely and more efficiently. By working together, EMBARQ India and Mumbai’s bus companies are improving both the safety of bus operations and the fuel efficiency of the vehicles.

The scholarship was created by the Schipper Family and EMBARQ, with cooperation from leading scholars and policy makers, and is made possible from donations from individual donors as well as from an instrumental grant from the Shell Foundation.

Sudhir Gota’s research will focus on the current ASIF framework in Asia, or “activity, “mode share,” “intensity,” and “fuel mix,” and its usage to determine what existing parameters could be causing a high fluctuation in results. In doing so, the ASIF usage can become more credible and consistent. This framework was initially developed by Schipper himself and created a way to understand the different components of transport energy use in order to calculate emissions.

Rio+20, the UN conference on sustainable development, was hailed as the first high-level international development conference to pay significant attention to sustainable transportation. Sixteen transport-related voluntary commitments emerged from partners convened by SLoCaT at the conference. One of the first announcements was the commitment from multi-lateral development banks to shift $175 billion towards sustainable transport.

Arzu Tekir, Director of EMBARQ Turkey, will be making the case for investment in sustainable mobility and its numerous benefits for Turkish cities at the 2013 Private Equity and Venture Capital Summit in Istanbul on June 21. Attendees will include investors and venture capitalists, creating a valuable opportunity to showcase how increased investment in communication technologies and sustainable transport has the potential to put Turkey on a more sustainable path.

The World Bank and EMBARQ Mexico concluded its month-long 2013 Leaders in Urban Transport Planning capacity building program in Mexico City on May 25. The training was part of the World Bank’s “Leadership in Urban Transport Planning” capacity building series, which aims at building capacity for holistic and comprehensive urban planning.
This year’s program, conducted in Spanish, was geared toward developing leadership, awareness and implementation strategies for urban integrated mobility planning.

Last month, India’s newest bus rapid transit (BRT) system, iBus, launched trial operations in Indore. Over the last seven years, the implementing agency, Atal Indore City Transport Services Limited (AICTSL) worked closely with several public and private agencies, including EMBARQ India, to bring this project to fruition. The system includes an 11.4-kilometer (7-mile) corridor, 21 median stations, and custom-designed buses, which are expected to serve 70,000 passengers per day.

EMBARQ Brazil’s newest project, “From PAC to Plan”, is an effort to increase technical knowledge on sustainable urban mobility plans. Targeted towards medium-sized cities all over Brazil, the initiative aims to increase the quality of Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) projects and help cities to develop their mobility plans. For two days (May 2-3, 2013), the southern city of Pelotas, which has 346,000 residents, hosted the first of what will be a series of workshops on sustainable mobility planning.
