Two new researchers have been awarded the prestigious Lee Schipper Memorial Scholarship for Sustainable Transport and Energy Efficiency for transformative research proposals to challenge conventional wisdom. In addition to the global award to a young researcher or researchers, which has been awarded since 2012, a second award supports a young African researcher, an extension of the scholarship now in its third year.

Albany, NY (April 7, 2022) — Today an agreement was reached on New York’s annual State Budget. When passed, the budget will enact a nation-leading commitment for New York to achieve the first fully zero emission statewide school bus fleet in the country.

At Transforming Transportation 2022, the Vision Zero Challenge recognized four Latin American cities that have taken important strides to make their streets safer and more equitable.
In 2021, the Vision Zero Challenge worked closely with four cities – Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima, Peru; Mérida, Mexico; and Belo Horizonte, Brazil – to guide them through their efforts to develop and implement a road safety plan aligned with at least one Vision Zero tenet, such as speed management or road safety for children.

On the occasion of the 6th annual UN Global Road Safety Week, WRI has joined leaders and organizations around the world in signing an open letter that calls for an urgent transition to low-speed, livable streets. This year’s Road Safety Week theme is “Streets for life,” focused on the importance of limiting speeds to 30 kilometers per hour on streets where people and vehicles mix.

WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities is partnering with 3M to improve road safety conditions for children in India through safer routes to school. The project will draw on the extensive experience of 3M and WRI to gain a deeper understanding of the road safety situation around schools in Delhi and Mumbai through data analysis and implement targeted interventions that embody the “Safe System” approach to road safety.
