EMBARQ co-organized the 11th annual Transforming Transportation conference with the World Bank and a team of partner organizations on January 16 and 17, 2014. Hosted at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C., this year’s event was the largest in the history of Transforming Transportation.

Cities across the globe now have more resources at their disposal to improve traffic safety and reduce crashes and fatalities. In December 2013, EMBARQ launched two publications that highlight the positive impact that sustainable transport initiatives – such as mass transport, bicycling, and walking – can have on traffic safety, in addition to numerous other co-benefits.

EMBARQ Turkey was awarded the “Public Transportation and Public Health Award” in the Environment category from the Turkish Public Health Association. The award recognizes EMBARQ Turkey for its non-motorized transport project BikeLab Istanbul.

EMBARQ India received special recognition in the third edition of the Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards, announced at last week’s Volvo Nobel Memorial Seminar in Bangalore, India. EMBARQ India’s submission, “Towards a Walkable and Sustainable Bengaluru: A Safe Access Project for Indiranagar Metro”, aims to improve safety and accessibility for bikers and pedestrians around Bangalore’s metro stations.

The pedestrianization of Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula, which began in 2011, has resulted in the conversion of over 250 streets from car-dominated roads to people-oriented spaces. EMBARQ Turkey played a key role in conceptualizing and catalyzing the pedestrianization project, and is now furthering its contribution by conducting a survey assessment and analysis of the project’s success.

EMBARQ’s Nicolae Duduta will present a webinar on traffic safety in bus corridors on Friday, September 27, at 11:00 am EDT. Duduta is an Associate Transport Planner based in EMBARQ’s Washington, D.C. office, whose work focuses on transport, urban development, and traffic safety projects across the EMBARQ Network. Presented for the BRT Center of Excellence, the webinar will analyze how choices made in the planning and design of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system can have a great impact on its safety performance.
