In order to adapt to the effects of a changing global climate, more and more cities are addressing their vulnerability to climate change by creating resilience plans or by prioritizing resilience in their master and sector-specific plans. These plans often use multiple strategies to help cities understand their vulnerabilities and prepare for climate impacts. WRI Sustainable Cities is currently supporting Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre, Brazil, in a variety of ways as they develop their resilience plans.
In Rio de Janeiro, WRI Sustainable Cities is helping the local government incorporate socio-economic indicators—with an emphasis on resilience at the level of the individual person—into the city’s resilience plan, Rio Resiliente. In Porto Alegre, WRI Sustainable Cities is helping build resilience by focusing on the role of urban mobility in resilience planning. Working with additional cities in the future, WRI Sustainable Cities will serve as a platform for sharing lessons about resilience planning in different urban contexts.
