Manager, City Renewable Energy Solutions, U.S. Energy Program
Alex is a Manager of City Renewable Energy Solutions in WRI’s U.S. Energy Program. Specifically, Alex oversees technical assistance for cities in support of the American Cities Climate Challenge led by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Prior to joining WRI, Alex was a senior consultant at Spark Policy Institute and a technical project leader at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. At Spark, he supported both foundations and governments undertake strategic learning and adaptive planning processes. This work focused on improving the authenticity of the stakeholder-driven collaboration and developing novel approaches to achieve systems-level impact and outcomes. While at NREL, Alex oversaw the program design and implementation of a number of federal initiatives focused on climate resiliency and sustainability, working in collaboration with city, state, tribal and international governments. During this time, Alex supported DOE’s Cities Leading through Energy Analysis and Planning (Cities-LEAP) Program, the management of DOE's Tribal Energy Program; and leading content development, co-authoring DOE’s Tribal Strategic Energy Plan and Planning Handbook. Also, as part of his past work at NREL, Alex served as a lead facilitator for the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality’s Preparedness Pilot and the subsequent development of NREL’s Resiliency Roadmap, a framework for inter-jurisdictional strategic planning and stakeholder collaboration. Additionally, he led the development of a subnational initiative for the internationally focused Clean Energy Solution Center, sponsored by the U.S. State Department.
He holds a Masters of Urban and Regional Planning and a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Colorado – Denver, as well as undergraduate degrees in Environmental Studies and Psychology from Indiana University.
Alex lives in Denver, Colorado with his wife and two children. He enjoys the outdoors and making the most of Colorado’s sunshine alongside his wife, daughter, and son.
