Aparna Vijaykumar is a Project Associate with the Urban Transport and Road Safety Team. She is associated with the work on Road Safety Policy based out of Delhi as part of the Bloomberg Road Safety Initiative. She is part of the Committee on Urban Roads, drafting design codes with a focus on safety for pedestrians and other vulnerable users for the Indian Roads Congress. She is also part of the Vision Zero and the Streets for All campaigns across various states in India to ensure zero fatalities on roads and promote sustainable and active transport. She coordinates the Urban Development and Urban Transport work in Kochi, Kerala with a focus on Kochi Metro and Cochin Smart Mission and is currently based out of the port city.
Aparna has been with WRI India since August, 2015 and was initially part of the Early Professional Programme. Prior to WRI, she interned with the Town and Country Planning Organization at Palakkad and was part of the Master Planning process for the town of Chittur in Kerala. As a student of Urban Planning, she was involved in a research project funded by the MoUD on Alternative Approaches to Master Plan. Before shifting focus to Cities, she worked in the construction industry as a Design Professional and at National Institute of Technology, Trichy as Research Assistant where she was part of a project funded by the Coir Board of India on Geosynthetics for reinforcing Rural Roads for two years altogether.
Aparna is a Civil Engineer by graduation from NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad – Calicut University and holds a Master's degree in Urban Planning from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. Aparna enjoys monsoons in Kerala, reading and exploring.
