Senior Project Associate, Urban Development, WRI India
Prayash Giria is Senior Project Associate with the Urban Development team. He has been with the WRI India team for 5 years, during which time he has supported engagements with Central and State Governments in India around urban planning, affordable housing, and capacity building. Notable projects he has been associated with include WRI India’s co-operation with the Indian Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ Global Housing Technology Challenge – India, sub-scheme on Local Area Plans and Town Planning Schemes, and the erstwhile Capacity Building for Urban Development programs. Additionally, he has also supported WRI’s work with the State Governments of Delhi, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Mizoram, on various urban-focused themes.
Prior to joining WRI India, Prayash worked in habitat-focused non-profits and design practices as a grant-maker, researcher, urban designer and architect. Key initiatives he has been a contributor to include the India window of the UN-Habitat’s Urban Youth Fund; Delhi’s nomination to UNESCO for World Heritage Site status; and Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront Development scheme.
Prayash holds a MSc in Urban Development Planning from the Development Planning Unit at University College London (UCL), where he was a co-author on published researches on community-led slum upgrading in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and strategic action plans for tackling the gentrification in London. He also holds a Bachelors degree in Architecture from School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi.
In his free time, Prayash moonlights as a semi-professional travel photographer, and an advanced-amateur fitness nut. He has grown up in and continues to live in Delhi, but has briefly called Kolkata, Paris, Ahmedabad, London, and Mumbai home as well.
